About the Event
Description:
Our London chapter has started a collaboration with Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University to work on a “Coffee and Careers” series, which invites past grad alumni from UWO to speak about their grad to career journey. The goal of this series is to help raise awareness on career opportunities and better educate grad students on specific roles in industry. This session consists of two sections: (1) a casual “interview” style chat with a moderator where we would discuss the speaker's overall experience, career journey, current position, etc, and (2) an open question period with the attendees.
Objectives:
- Help raise awareness on career opportunities and better educate graduate students on specific roles in industry
- Understand how career journeys are not linear and there can be many different routes to get into a career.
- Share more about Ashley's career journey from his Ph.D. into her career at STEMCELL Technologies and University of California, San Diego
Speaker: Ashley Watson, Ph.D., Co-Investigator, University of California, San Diego
About the Speaker
Ashley studied biology with a specialization in genetics before completing her Ph.D. in 2015 with Dr. Nathalie Berube at Western University in the department of biochemistry. She completed postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Li-Huei Tsai at MIT between 2015 - 2018. After her postdoc, Ashley was briefly a product manager at STEMCELL Technologies in Vancouver, BC, before moving into a scientist position. In 2022, Ashley was recruited to the University of California, San Diego, as a co-investigator in the Developmental and Cognitive Genomics Research Group. Her research is motivated by a lack of mechanistic knowledge of the molecular processes underlying brain development and cognition, and she is in constant pursuit of a sustainable work/life balance.
