Description:

During the pandemic, disinformation has become ubiquitous - how do you sooth the public's fears about COVID-19, and vaccines, while simultaneously disseminating accurate scientific information with ease? Join the S2BN Winnipeg Chapter for an evening where we will be discussing the field of scientific communication has changed during the pandemic, how the Public Health Agency has been combating disinformation, and the future of the field going forward. The evening will conclude with a Q&A portion where students can dissect Joy’s career history and learn about the skill set required to succeed in this field.

Session objectives:

• Highlight the various careers within community relations at the Public Health Agency of Canada for STEM graduates
• Learn about the challenges facing professionals in this industry currently
• Learn how to market yourself and how to acquire the skill sets to succeed in this industry

Our guest speaker: 

Joy Stadnichuk, BA

Joy has been with the Public Health Agency of Canada since 2005, where she started in an administrative assistant position before moving into her current role as Community Liaison Program Officer. As part of the Community Relations team, Joy provides tours for national and international visitors who are visiting the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health. Over the past 10 years, Joy has conducted more than 1,000 tours top highlight the work done at Canada’s only Level 4 containment facility.

Joy also helps to coordinate outreach events such as career fairs, high school presentations and public speaking requests for scientists and researchers. She additionally provides orientation sessions to all new employees and produces a monthly feature highlighting individual staff.

Previous to her work with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Joy spent 15 years in the educational field, working with a variety of private institutions and government-funded programs including Canada World Youth, the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina), the Youth Internship Program (funded through Human Resources Development Canada). She has also taught in the public school system to both elementary and secondary students.

Joy originally hails from Saskatchewan where she obtained her B.A. (English) at the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Regina with a speciality in Arts Education.
