S2BN Winnipeg - Networking for Scientists: Feeling Comfortable Outside of Your Comfort Zone
On the 1st of October, the S2BN Winnipeg Chapter organized a networking workshop for undergraduate and graduate students via Zoom. Venture Manager at the Creative Destruction Lab and the Director of Business Development for S2BN Mathew Platt started the evening with an in-depth presentation on how to confidently market yourself to potential employers, build your network and de-bunking some myths about networking.
Here is a summary of what was covered:
- Common fears about networking and the reality of networking
- The anatomy of a self-pitch
- How to prepare for a networking event – what to research beforehand, what to bring, and how to approach potential connections
- How to follow up with your connections and how you can network virtually!
Afterwards, we headed into breakout rooms to try out what we learned and refine our networking abilities. Our very own S2BN Winnipeg executive team lead the attendees through a guided discussion.
Thank you to the Venture Manager at the Creative Destruction Lab, Mathew Platt, for taking the time to share these tips and to all the attendees who took the time out of their busy schedule to join us that evening! We look forward to seeing you at our next event! Lastly, we want to thank our local sponsor: the CHRIM Trainee Career Development Group and our national sponsor BioTalent Canada.
